Nov. 21 (Bloomberg) –- AeroFarms has developed a vertical farming system that can grow organic baby leafy greens in urban settings. They're doing it using aeroponics -- the process of growing plants in mist without any soil -- and plan to launch a branded product from a new 80,000-square-foot warehouse in Newark, New Jersey. AeroFarms CEO and Co-Founder David Rosenberg talks to Bloomberg's Sam Grobart about how the company is bringing their produce mainstream for Bloomberg's "The Year Ahead: 2015" series. Dit is de toekomst van agricultuur. In 16 dagen kan men met deze technologie oogsten, wat anders 30 dagen zou zijn. 22 gewassen kunnen verbouwd worden, wat anders 3 zouden zijn. En dat allemaal zonder bestrijdingsmiddelen en waarbij 95% minder water gebruikt wordt. Lokaal voedsel produceren is duurzamer en efficiënter. Alleen al deze vertical farm kan 80.000 mensen van voedsel voorzien. Aqua/aero-ponics zijn de technologieën die in een natural law/resource based economy breed ingezet zullen worden.

Aeroponics is not organic. And the biggest problem is going to be cost, even with tax credits it's still very expensive to grow this way and there's only so many yuppies that are willing to shell out for expensive salad greens.
An outfit in Vancouver BC with much smaller ambitions went bankrupt in under two years owing its creditors 4 million dollars -
THis is slightly Depressing. Its not just about transitioning to a better way of farming than traditional commersial AG which is completely suicidal and inherently inefficient albeit Ultra simplified. We need to support systems that are healing the landscapes, building soil, and supporting ecological systems. Not high capital Industrial Corporate owned tower farms.

Aerophonics is not new. In Singapore, they have a vertical farm named "Sky Greens". Go check it out. The whole concept is not new. But the idea of a vertical farm if your PSF costs are that high, justifies itself. In the states, the PSF prices of real estate isn't as high. So, vertical farms are harder to take off.

Coated leafy greens as you say now have a much longer shelf life & and from the looks of them no spoilage.
So on the one hand technologies improve distributive flow quality capacity an cost in the traditional realm. While new technologies hope to strike it big by creating a new market distributive flow system under the realm of "better"
attracting investment
But when the thing looks the same where is the better you looking at needing an educated audience and then you hope your physics are truly better.
