Have you ever wondered how cheese is made? Go behind the scenes and experience just one minute of what life is like for a cow whose milk is used for cheese products. Calves on dairy farms are torn away from their loving mothers when they're only 1 day old. Female cows produce milk for their offspring just as human mothers do, but these calves are instead fed milk replacers so that their mothers' milk can be used to make cheese products for human consumption. Mother cows are impregnated yearly and have their babies stolen from them each time, shortly after birth. While cows have a natural lifespan of 25 years, those whose milk is used to make cheese products will be killed after only four or five years, when their milk production starts to wane. On their journey to the slaughterhouse, they typically go without food, water, or rest for the duration of the journey, which can sometimes last for days. Cheese consumption also supports the veal industry, as the male calves who are torn away from their mothers are put in tiny pens designed to limit exercise and normal muscle growth for three to 18 weeks before finally being slaughtered for their flesh.
