"Ariel and Eric, I just got that." What? What did you get? What have I missed?
-
Ariel in the movie doesn't just want to be human because of the boy, she was also fascinated by the human world beforehand.
-
At least in the musical Ariel is the one to defeat Ursula and the movie sell has the theme of sacrifice just not with Ariel, King Triton grants Ariel legs and let's her be with Ariel even though it hurts him
-
I love this fairy tale even though it is really sad.I lalso love the movie Ariel is one of my favorite Disney princesses. Unlike the princesses before her she is the first one to be active and she saves the prince! :) And many seem to forget that Ariel wanted to be a human way before she saw Eric and shows that she is more curios with the life above just getting a guy.

Matt, I will agree that Ariel can be pretty frivolous and just does stuff without really thinking first and that she doesn't really learn anything in the end (But I think they better job with this in the stage musical), but when you said Ariel "pretty much just wants the boy", I'm going to have to disagree with you on that point and here's why: Ariel had the big "I want" song with "Part of your World" that she felt that she didn't belong in under the sea as a mermaid and felt that she should have been human BEFORE knowing about Eric. Eric was just the driving force for Ariel to finally decide "Screw it, I'm going for it!" Really that and when her father destroyed all her stuff and that was (I believe) the last straw when she finally decided that relationship with her father has officially gone down the drain and there was no hope in fixing it and that she should go somewhere where she's more likely to be happy.

I recall their was a kid anime version of the book and it did follow the book pretty closely. I mean real close, in fact they were kinda topless in it, of course it never showed anything. I watched it as a kid, and I never saw anything wrong with it. It even spoiler'
death in it.
It has the grandmother, and has the sisters. Plus it even makes the bad guys the prince's parents. Plus the sea witch was more in it, but she was more of a informer than a "bad guy"
I think you should look at this movie -
I think Fairy Tale Theater's version is a far superior adaption that gives a sad & happy ending since the love & friendship that is developed between the Mermaid, Prince, & his bride is sweet and believable.

I had a thought the other day what if they kept the there of sacrifice by having King Triton die in the final battle with Ursula and then his spirit apologizes to Ariel and gives her legs and still married Eric but Ariel's father still dies, Disney killed Bambi's mother, Mufasa, and Tarzan's ape dad (forgot his name) so they couldn't have possibly gotten away with that, anyway it was just a thought that came to me
-
my dad installed TVs at Ariel's voice actress' home : )
-
Honestly, I thought that Disney was clever with this movie in that its not Ariel's story. its Triton's story but told through Ariel's eyes. Triton is the one who learns a lesson. he has to learn to let his daughter go. Its just told through her POV rather than his.
-
I know this probably isn't a good reason but I think the reasonwhy triton didn't punish Ariel was probably because he thought the ordeal was punishment enough.

Strangely enough I grew up with the Anderson story of The Little Mermaid (mainly because of a giant coloring book I had) and though I wished she got her prince I still really liked the ending. When grown up I liked the ending better and understood it better. When I finally saw the Disney version at age 12, I predicted how the whole movie would turn out and still loved it. That animation's incredible (I still rewind it for the sake of looking over animation again).
I still love the Disney version for what it was/is, but honestly love the original story best mostly because of it's heartfelt message of love, being denied, self sacrifice, and being unexpectedly rewarded for it (sometimes I even wonder if the sea witch set up the whole thing so that she would get an immortal soul or become a mermaid). Even the Disney studio believes that the whole story involved Anderson's tragic love life of unbelonging and rejection. -
actually, I'm pretty sure she only had 5 sisters in the book
-
Is it weird that I'm a guy and I actually ENJOY the movie. Also Disney wanted to make it kid friendly so....yeah.

i have to disagree about what they said about the movie version of Ariel. she did not just want a man. yes it's more about love than the book but it's made clear in the movie that she wanted to be human, long before falling in love at first sight.
even during the dates with Eric, she'll have fun exploring the human world. also all this hate for the unrealistic love at first sight is understandable. however the reason why it's so bad is because it's usually an excuse to have a reward for the princess without having to develop the man's character or their relationship. in the movie, Eric and Ariel spend time together.. Eric is fun. it's like disney realized, it's ok for "love at first sight" as long as the viewers get to know them too.
so i don't think Ariel is a bad character at all. i'm not saying the movie is better than the book.. since like they said, Ariel is rewarded for her poor decision. i know i might be one of the few, but i can't help liking the disney version more.. -
The book is beautiful,

11:57 You know, if this review wasn't made two years prior, I would have thought for sure you were talking about Hans from Frozen, because oh my god, Hans. We can't have a non-evil love triangle in a Disney movie.
-
Why you people say that Ariel was a selfish brat just because she argued Triton about what he prohibited her from? She was being persuasive because she wanted her father understand that world can't be all bad and it wasn't just because of Eric, if you really listen to "part of your world" she was tired of being in sea and wanted to explore the land. It's not stupidity to be advantageous and when you were saying she made no sacrifice, wasn't she willing to give away her voice and her old life in the sea? When you say she learned nothing, didn't she felt guilty of what she had done? If you watch the sequel, Return to the Sea where she has a daughter, Melody that is other way around and Ariel didn't want to let her to do the same mistake. I'm glad Disney change the story. I don't understand why she didn't write a message if she signed the contract though, but Ariel is the character I relate to.

Can you do a.a Milne Winnie the pooh vs the disney movie the many adventures of Winnie the pooh and the black culdron the disney movie vs the book series
what is so wrong with changing your world??? when you have nothing to loose... and you know what you want... why dont go get it???!!!! people hate her because she leaves home.... DONT WE ALL??!!!
what is wrong with a little romance??!!! why are people so bitter these days!??!!!
theres no reasoning with you... you are the first ones complaining how disney princesses need to be rescue, do nothing, expect no adventure, are pretty comfortable with themselves, expect a guy to do everything for her
FUCK YOU... heres a princess that changes her world, goes after what she wants, makes the first move on her prince, defeats her villain, SAVES HER PRINCE LIFE, but all you see is that she leaves home... FUCK YOU
