Didn't they say the parents wouldn't believe the kids when they complained about Trunchbull in the book as well?
-
In the book the school was called borstal.
-
Have you read The BFG? I think that would be a interesting BvM with the new Steven Spielberg movie.
-
I agree, the book is much better.
-
Book was so better!

You are not gonna believe this but I looked just like her at my age when I was little.

So interesting to hear that Matilda's music was a strong point - for me, it was the weakest part in an otherwise perfect show. I think the script and lyrics are much, much stronger and more memorable. Tim Minchin's music is fine, but he's no Alan Menken.

I've seen the musical and while it does have its cheesy moments and the villains are really over the top, I think it's on par with the book. I hope you guys see it sometime and vlog about it because I want to know how you think it compares. As someone whose favorite book was Matilda as a kid, I thought it did an amazing job of capturing the spirit of the book while also putting its own spin on everything. The visuals and imagery is unlike what you'd expect and one plot element that they add makes Miss Honey's story even more poignant. She's definitely more of a cautionary tale in the musical but, like in the movie, she has a few moments of standing up to Miss Trunchbull or cheering on her students as they defy the Trunchbull's orders. The musical also manages to make the Wormwoods both funny and menacing. You really understand how Matilda is feeling before Quiet (and the incidental music features pieces of Quiet even in the first act) and by the end, her staying with Miss Honey rather than leaving with her parents makes you really happy. In addition, the minor character of Mrs. Phelps is given a much bigger role and it's definitely an improvement. It would be really difficult for me to decide whether the book is better but I can tell you without any uncertainty that it's better than the movie.

Also, Mara Wilson's mother died during filming, so that was probably a big factor of why her performance wasnt great. I doubt her heart was in it for alot of the time

One difference in the film is that at the end her mom does show come humanity at the last minute, realizing t hat Matilda probably would be better off with Ms Honey, and convincing Harry to also sign the adoption papers, as "the first decent thing they ever did for their daughter" In the book both parents are like "whatever" so neither of then get the last minute humanity

You really dragged the movie this time around and I can't say I agree with this video. I believe the movie is on par with the book, but for different reasons. As in - how they both approach the same story differently. That's why, to me, they're equally good. Though I do admit I may be blinded by nostalgia because I saw, and loved, the movie before I read the book. Still, I do love the series.
