About Bell's Brewery Bell's Brewery, Inc. began in 1985 with a quest for better beer and a 15 gallon soup kettle. Since then, we've grown into a regional craft brewery that employs more than 200 people over an 18 state area, in addition to Puerto Rico and Washington DC. The dedication to brewing flavorful, unfiltered, quality craft beers that started in 1985 is still with us today. We currently brew over 20 beers for distribution as well as many other small batch beers that are served at our pub in Kalamazoo, the Eccentric Cafe, (see below). Our ongoing goal is to brew thoughtfully, creatively and artistically. We strive to bring an authentic and pleasant experience to all of our customers through our unique ales and beers. The Eccentric Cafe On June 11, 1993, Bell's Brewery, Inc. became the first Michigan brewery to serve beer by the glass to the public. The Eccentric Cafe offers customers a chance to taste many of our well known beers, as well as small batch brews that are not distributed outside of the pub. Visitors enjoy its warm atmosphere and spacious beer garden. The Eccentric Cafe also features interesting food, an extensive collection of art and ephemera, and live music. The Eccentric Cafe's entertainment schedule can be found here or by calling 269-382-2332. The Cafe underwent a significant expansion and officially reopened on March 28, 2011. The core of the project is a new, dedicated music venue in what used to be a warehouse and now hosts musicians from across the country. Eight additional tap handles were added, bringing our current draft selection to 20. The restrooms were expanded and additional seating options were also part of the renovations in addition to a transformed Beer Garden, new patio and a new entry way. Take a look. Investing in sustainability The art of brewing is an age-old tradition that represents humans' deep relationship with the natural environment. From the cultivation of grain and hops to fermentation, it is abundantly clear that the health of our natural envi¬ronment heavily influences the craft quality of our beer. When most people think of the word "sustainability", they think of "green" or "environmentally-friend¬ly." Though these associations are helpful, they do not always tell the whole story. We view sustainability as the capacity for our business to thrive in future generations through the practices of environmental stewardship, economic robustness and social integrity. Sustainability is about more than caring about the Earth. It is awareness of how an indi¬vidual or organization impacts their surroundings over the long-term. It is the idea that if we are aware of how we impact our surroundings, we can act in ways that provide for economic, environmental, and so¬cial benefits to ourselves (and our children) in the future. Bell's is consistently trying to act in ways that increase and preserve natural resources. Here are some ex¬amples: Farming Our farm in Shepherd, Michigan uses no-till farming practices that support sur¬rounding ecosystems by mini¬mizing erosion and the use of water-contaminating fertilizers, while improving soil quality. Barley grown at our farm is used for Bell's seasonal Christmas Ale and Harvest Ale along with our year round Midwestern Pale Ale. More information on the Bell's Farm can be found here. Reducing impact An estimated 87-percent company-wide trash diversion rate saves thousands of pounds annually from incineration or a landfill. Garbage collection has been reduced at the brewery from three pick-ups per week to one as a result of our recycling efforts. earthchoice cups, used at Bell's Eccentric Cafe, are derived from renewable resources and reduce our consumption of petroleum based plastics. A modular, extensive sedum green roof (shown at the top of this page) above our conditioning warehouse increases insulation efficiency and extends the life of a waterproofing membrane.
