Cattle farmers in Australia say their livelihoods are at risk, with multiple pressures on them from both domestic and international sources. On the one hand, drought has been hurting their stocks, and now live export bans due to evidence of animal cruelty abroad has affected their incomes. Some farmers in Queensland are hoping the solution is at the ballot box. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Richmond, Australia.

This "we need meat" thing is propaganda. I have a blood test yearly and my results are perfect. Get protein from foods like Quinoa, lentils and beans. I eat kale but don't know enough about it benefits to comment. Come an join the growing world community of vegetarians. You can sleep at night knowing that you have not contributed to any form of animal cruelty. And save money too!

the way society is designed to function they do not want us to buy local, they want imports/exports...so it seems. But the best for our local community is to buy local produce but apparently the 'fat cats' with power have other plans.

irony that Im Australian and only had kangaroo meat a few times. I don't mind it but it is distinctive strong taste. Maybe if it were mixed, like kangaburgers so there is more breadcrumbs and veggies and only small amount of meat? Or maybe I just didn't cook it right. If the global finances crash, heck Id eat anything (my guinea pigs might get nervous lol)

you might be a good one to ask! I believe kale is the 'beef' for vegans. There are lots of varieties though, do you eat a certain type? Im not vegan but we have been thinking to change to vegetarian diet for a few reasons, costs, health and costs. Yes I said cost twice as it saves on buying meat plus I can grow our own . Health to avoid all the nasty pesticides and health for weight for my husband (he is willing to go vegan), myself and kids vegetarian, maybe small amount meat for kids if wanted

The trouble is we possible own less of Australia than foreign companies :(

$10?? for mince meat maybe lol. It has got to the point that most meat is too expensive for my family and I am tired of serving them up crap cuts. I never thought I'd say this, but its time to go vegetarian! Id even go vegan except I like milk and eggs >.<. Gathering recipes as I speak, need to find tricky things to make so my kids don't riot lol. Im sorry for the farmers, but the big company's greed leaves little choice for average families, either cut back or cut meat out :(

Close the world doors, then as a continent AUS will be the richest and most diverse, other countries and nations could then try to bargain with us :)

As a yoga instructor I find your comment baffling. Not many of the cruel and insensitive can keep up with me. They are usually too fat and have diabetes. All my vegan friends are trim, taught and terrific.

code for "can't refute" that?
-
Aggghhh! You communist! How are they going to buy new airplanes and helocopters and take 6 month vacations every year if nogood reds like you spread such awful selfish ideas around?
-
Why couldn't the Australian Government build desalination plants and pump the fresh water to where it is need most? It may be costly at first but in the long run it will pay off.
-
Lamb is always expensive everywhere - you get less meat per animal and most costs are per animal.
-
You'd think China would be gobblin' em up
-
Yeah, people generally don't know shit about nutrition.

im Australian, and im Metro as well, ive no patience for these fat cat bastard cockeys, not while im paying more for a steak than fuckin egyption half way cross the world.
-
It is just about impossible to reply to a comment that contains so much disinformation.
-
Shut down this industry.
-
why can't us aussies enjoy cheaper steaks if there's a surplus of cattle???
-
Indonesia and Egypt are both Islamic, i thought the main idea of Halal was treating the animal with respect...

Why so these cretins find it necessary to torture the animals before killing them? It's hard to understand. I haven't eaten beef in years.
