This video was shot in August 1985. It's a drive down New Hempstead Rd. to Main Street in New City, down Main to Route 304 and Ludvigh Rd. in Bardonia. Middletown Road in Nanuet to Route 59 to Pascack Road, then to Eckerson in Hillcrest. Up Route 45 and then back down New Hempstead. The video was taken by an inexperienced (at the time) cameraman, through a dirty car window and without the benefit of image stabilization. Be forewarned...it isn't great quality, but it still gives a small glimpse of all the changes in 28 years. Lastly, there is no sound.

My appreciation for this rare, vintage video; the footage of which is precious! I graduated from high school in 1985. Today I just turned 49 in March of 2016! I still feel the spirit of 1985 to this very day, within me... Shared and accredited accordingly to you! Thank you!

Got to thank you also. I was 19 back then and to see Clarkstown back in the day is a treat. Love seeing the old Nanuet mall before the late 80s remodeling, Tapeville, The Ground Round and Childworld, now long gone.

Wish there were more videos like this

I appreciate you taking the time to post this. Brought back some good memories.

I lived in Hillcrest in 1985. Moved there from NYC in 1954, Moved to Spring Valley in 1994. Back to Hillcrest in 1996. To Monsey in 2001 and have been in Monsey ever since. That Waldbaum's in Hillcrest closed on Friday, September 26, 1986. I was the first customer in their new location in Spring Valley the following day. What did you use to take this video. I'm sure there were no cell phone cameras in 1985. Camcorders were very expensive as they had just come out. And Super 8 movie film only was 5 minutes per cartridge.

Did you beep through the tunnel?

Wow! Thank you

Such a great walk down memory lane. I haven't lived in that area since 97, but man this was fun to watch. So many great times. The big thing that jumps out at me is just how much trash there is on the side of the road. I always felt like we lived someplace pretty clean, and this makes it really clear how much cleaner we Americans have gotten thanks to cleanup and anti-litter drives. Thanks for the memories!

I now live on the street that you see on the right at 3:59 (Virginia Street) :) It's great to see how my neighborhood looked back then!

Thanks so much for posting this video! I was 16 when this video was taken and I lived on New Hempstead Road, coincidentally at the exact point where the video ends (you can't see the house but it's on the right side), Can you tell me who took this video and why? It's amazing that it basically starts and ends at my house! SO many memories! Thanks again for posting!!!

Thank you so much for posting this. I really enjoyed revisiting those days and remembering how it all looked back then. A real gift to those of us who lived in Rockland both then and now.

Just noticed Danny's Dandelion and Herman's too. Awesome!

Wow. Its like I'm 9 again! Thank you for sharing this. I remember that Fotomat in the Clarkstown Mall. Ground Round, Child World, Nanuet Mall, Pickles, Hiltop Deli, etc. Great memories!

Main Street New City has essentially the same strip malls, just more traffic, more signals and more concrete, and different stores.
59 so much more built up. -
What, no HD.... Just kidding. Great memories. I graduated in 1985, and hung out in NC and lived in Nanuet. Great to see the old sites!

I agree with David! Thank heavens for chroniclers of time and place. As a Hillcrest boy who moved to Israel 20 years ago I would love it if they did the same route today so we could see how Rockland has changed.
