The Stuart family has a long history of farming dating back to 1926. The entire Stuart family - Bill and Deb and their two sons Will and Christian - are currently raising 150 100% grass-fed crossbred Angus and Hereford beef cattle. The Stuarts distribute their beef to several outlets including a small store located on their farm. They also sell their beef to local Connecticut restaurants including the Boxcar Cantina in Greenwich, CT and The Elms in Ritchfield, CT. Their Animal Welfare Approved beef is even available at the New Milford Hospital in New Milford, CT - making it the first hospital to put Animal Welfare Approved beef on the menu! Bill Stuart said his family decided to apply to the Animal Welfare Approved program because they wanted to let consumers know that they have true respect for the animals they raise. Stuart said, "It's great to have the farm certified and to have Animal Welfare Approved tell the story about how the farm's animals are treated...Our core beliefs and Animal Welfare Approved's core beliefs are one and the same." While the Stuart Family Farm has only been using the Animal Welfare Approved label for a few short weeks, they are already seeing the benefits of the program. Bill said that customers are very impressed by their participation in the program. He said the customers "feel good buying products from an Animal Welfare Approved farm. It speaks highly of them as well-they can say, We buy beef from Stuart Family Farm and they are Animal Welfare Approved.'"
