Farms: An Interview with artist Peter Poskas

Peter Poskas is an eminent contemporary landscape painter, who for three decades has been devoted to painting realist views of the rural dairy farms and landscapes of Litchfield County, Connecticut, near where he lives in the village of Washington. He has also spent many summers on Monhegan Island, a remote rocky spot ten miles off the midcoast of Maine. With their crisply detailed execution, sensitivity to subtle gradations of light, and compositions that are taut and complex, Poskas's works are both authentic transcriptions and poetic evocations. --- In this interview, Ira Spanierman and Peter Poskas discuss one of his recent farm paintings "Prelude to Spring, New Milford, CT", a winter scene (Poskas's favorite time of year) where the presence of the animals caught his eye. Poskas also talks about his experiences painting these many farms in Connecticut and tells the story of his only refusal of a farm he would have liked to paint. The upcoming exhibition "Peter Poskas: Capturing Light" will be on view at Spanierman Gallery from Nov. 5-Dec. 5, 2009. If you'd like an illustrated brochure, please email us at info@spanierman.com. We hope to see you!

I have always loved his work. I grew up on the coast of Maine, and his sense of place is amazing. "Illuminated Landscape" is one of my favorite books. Does Mr. Poskas have any plans to do another book focusing on his ocean scenes or Monhegan?
