Any system of agriculture depending on electricity is not likely to work. During these periods there is more impact from solar outbursts disabling anything electric, moreover electricity generation may well be effected. I would go for thermal polytunnels with lots of composting manure and straw in the winter months to keep it warm. Don't compost in a heap - compost on the ground in a tunnel it keeps the plants warm and the CO2 released from the green matter breaking down gives the plants a boost. Simple is the key. Always has been, always will be. If it is so cold that there is no season at all we're screwed anyway. Plastic growing extends the season. Moreover the containers will not be providing growing room for the type of crops you need. You cannot live on lettuce and greens - it is not a food! You need to figure out how to grow calorie dense root crops. Deep raised beds with clear, thick tarp domes for example and again always compost on the surface for the heat.

I Just finished reading an article on how Marijuana Grow Ops are changing the way we look at farming.Though you can have high yields for indoor Farms,I wonder what the Nutritional value of what is grown by artificial light will be?

My local weather channel says 2015 will be warm due to the powerfull el nino... especially the north part of the pacific is very warm they claimed... lets se how things turn out... i have looked at southern hemisphere for the last 9 months and here major towns like melbourne, auckland, lauceston taz have been colder than average..
