I agree with all the brilliant comments. However, no one has mentioned how easily Megan could have prevented her pregnancy and broken heart. She could have found out if Frank really loved her, or if it was just lust or a "summer vacation love". It's rather plain speaking, ladies, but "Keep your legs together!" I know that it's modern times, but, truth is truth. If a man really loves you and wants to spend his life with you as his wife, he will pursue you. He will let NOTHING stand in his way. Consider this: Part of the infatuation on Frank's part is the CONQUEST. Conquest completed, lust and curiosity satisfied, then move on. Never mind that the woman is left pregnant, broken hearted and desolate. Still true.

Of course, it's not the ending we expected where Frank settles down with Megan in Chelsea, but can you imagine how challenging that would have been for them both? All the slights and put downs she would have experienced in that social milieu would have been like death by a thousand cuts. Megan's handling of the boorish Garton at the start of the story aptly demonstrates how she doesn't suffer fools, but when all is said and done she's a beautiful sensitive soul and would have been worn down eventually in London. Her luminescent personality would never go unnoticed in truly decent society but would have been overlooked in Chelsea for her lack of education, breeding, connections etc. The love Megan really needed and deserved wasn't with Joe or Frank but maybe with a local lad in a neighbouring parish with the kindness and sincerity of Jim.

No other films but British say so much with so few words. Thank for the sadness!

A lovely film... makes you really feel the love and live it. I love the movies from the 80's and 90's, at that time they still represented values and love mattered and it was real. the movies that they do recently are empty and more action oriented as opposed to the slow moving films from the 80's.
