Farms: A Seigneury along the St. Lawrence River in New France - 1663

A Minecraft recreation of a seigneury in New France in the mid 1600s. This is my attempt to show my students this unique form of land distribution. France had a colony in what became modern day Quebec in Canada. These seigneuries were along the banks of the St. Lawrence River; also known as "The Highway of New France". King Louis XIV owned all the land (in 1663). A couple of years after this scene Jean Talon became the powerful Intendant of New France. He is well known for the first census taken there. The farmers in the seigneury rented long strips of land from the Seigneur "landlord' who didn't own the land themselves either. These Habitants were poor, French and devout Catholics. They had very large families and the kids worked hard from a young age.

@ottawboy1 Any idea if there are any old grave sites in Quebec City for these settlers? Would be interesting to see a remnant or two of Nouvelle-France. This video is exactly around the time my family showed up. Thanks for posting!

Don't you want the descendants of this people to help you with this project ? It should be obvious. And we're much better in French, of course. :)
-
You seem to be confused. They were not poor and exploited prior to the Conquest. Yes, children worked, but that was normal when your family revenue came from agriculture. Almost each child of New France had a horse, and they even tought they should pass a law to restrict the use of horses, because people were using them instead of walking. They also restricted the quantity each family could have.

Say, these habitants were not especially poor at the time, they were treated much better than their European counterpart. They were proud to call themselves habitants because it meant they had ad better life than France's farmers.
