The Watershed Agricultural Council spearheads watershed protection programs in the New York City Watershed to keep drinking water clean for nine million New Yorkers. The success of these programs lies directly with the voluntary participation of private individuals, owners of watershed farms and woodlands. Keeping these lands within the context of the working landscape is paramount to regional economic viability. Productive, profitable and vibrant farm and wood businesses are the cornerstone to the watershed's future development as a great place to live, work and play. Haying is just one of the many activities supporting working farms throughout the region. The watershed also acts as a regional foodshed, providing food and farm products to the same water users downstream. This green space also attracts visitors, providing an accessible recreational outlet. The Council thanks Edgevilla Farm for their participation in the Agricultural and Easement Programs. This footage, filmed in 2004, is posted here in honor of Doris and Howard Aitken, their commitment to working farms, and their willingness to protect farmland for future generations.
