Unblinking and unsettling, this documentary lays bare a mysterious process that goes on all around us - what happens to people who die with no next of kin. Dead bodies in various stages of decomposition are seen, but not played for shock factor. Instead, you learn a little about each person, both what they were before death and what will happen to them afterward. They are followed from the discovery of the body to the final disposition of the remains, and each step in between.

Fucking hell this is graphic, but I must say it's slightly fascinating!

The sad part is them dying all alone :(

people saying the workers are disrespectful for laughing or that they shouldn't just be dragging the bodies around and slapping them on a gurney- you don't have this job and you don't know what it's like. You constantly see dead bodies, it's your job and you can't get emotionally invested in the bodies or you'd have a nervous breakdown after a week on the job. it's not like they're rolling bodies down the stairs or drawing dicks on them with sharpies, they're treating them like an object that needs to be moved with some amount of care. they're just trying to get their job done and make it through the day. if they need to have an occasional chuckle so they don't go home at night and cry about what they saw that day, no harm done.

This film is another reason I love YouTube. Without YT most of us would never come across this film. And I love reading the comments because it's good to hear peoples thoughts on the subject of death, its aftermath, and dying alone. Now that this film has people talking, I hope that the way these situations are handled, will be greatly improved in the near future. The whole time I watched this film, I kept thinking that the process in which they handled the deceased seemed a bit primitive and archaic. There must be a better way.
Can DNA be used to locate next of kin? If next of kin can't be located, could a close friend receive inheritance? Since more and more of our records are becoming digital, will that make the whole process more efficient? In storage, could freeze-drying the bodies keep down the amount of fluids and gasses being released? Instead of cremation, could Promession (Google it) be used? While I don't have a major problem with the cremains being poured into a mass grave, I think there should be some kind of festival or something to honor human lives. There should be a celebration of life even if nobody knew the deceased. It just shouldn't feel so cold and heartless. Also, for the people who work in this profession, do they receive counseling to help them process what they experience on the job?
Lastly, I think this film is a great example of why people obsess over not wanting to die alone. Many people get into marriages and long-term relationships hoping that they don't end up like these unfortunate individuals. -
Some of the LA smog is caused by people - literally.

When you do this kind of job you have to distance yourself from the emotional reality. So please, be grateful someone does this for a living.

You all complain too much. This is the job of these people and this is what they do. It is the harsh reality and they do the best they can to take care of these people and bodies. This is a hard job and you should respect them for what they do.

What really made me angry and sad was that they said one of these people were found to have enough money to be handled which meant he could've had a funeral been buried the right way but since no kin was found they instead let the county dispose of him. That makes me sick whether he had kin or not if the money was there he deserved a proper burial. That's real fucked that they did that to him and just burnt him up an put him in a mixed grave. Wow the greed is amazing!!!

I think I prefer the "birth" videos...... coming into this world, is so, sooo much better than leaving it.........Although for some of these people, it looks as if perhaps finally leaving this world was the best part of the whole journey.......Their struggles are finally over......
