We visit a training and educational program for marginalized youth in Zambia called YAPIA, a project of the U.S. African Development Fund (ADF). This discussion features a staff member of YAPIA describing an unusual partnership between "All Kids Can Learn," an AIDS orphan-assisting educational NGO, and a large commercial meat and chicken processing and packaging firm called Zambeef. About 20 students join a cohort to learn about animal husbandry, agricultural supply chains, and animal health issues. They also learn how to prepare for long term employment in agro-business, to help them move beyond subsistence farming. The students share responsibility for running a poultry production facility that will soon be able to produce 12,000 chickens for sale over the course of six weeks.
